Kaleia Turns 2!**

***Disclaimer: This post was written over a year. As with Magnolia, I started writing it just before her 2nd birthday. Life was SUPER crazy when Kaleia turned 2. I jotted down notes and have been working on it intermittently. As usual, it is long. Mostly, it is for Kaleia, but I hope you enjoy learning more about my daughter through my eyes.***

The Real Question

What was this post going to be about?

During this vacation, I've been going through my old drafts finishing them or deleting them. I came upon this one from November 5, 2008.  There was no text, only a title.  I am guessing whatever it was going to be about was trumped when we were surprised to find out we were pregnant with Kaleia.

So here's your chance! Write your version of what the real question is either on your own blog and link to it in the comments or just put your post in the comments if you don't have a blog.

Check out some other posts I was able to finish. I kept their original dates for "scrapbooking" purposes, our primary reason for this blog.

A Year in Unpublished Pictures - 2011: Part 3

Part 3 brings us to Beijing, China, where we are now. This season was probably packed with more fiascos than any other time of my life.
July in China:
We flew to China on our 9th anniversary. Magnolia did pretty well but Kaleia struggled and therefore Mama was a wreck by the end of the 11 hour flight. We were met at the airport and dropped off at the school dormitory in the middle of the night with little direction. The next few weeks we found ourselves on a steep learning curve while we settled into an apartment and Shannon started the school year. There was much culture shock, especially on the part of Shannon. The girls got used to celebrity status. Brian realized just how tough it was going to be to set up an office in China. Make sure to click read more.
Magnolia pretending to sleep with her new neck pillow.
Brian getting to know our new, and now good, friend Park.

A Year in Unpublished Pictures - 2011: Part 2

Part 2 saw us in 5 different living locations, 4 flights, 3 states, 1 wedding, and 1 graduation. There was much rejoicing and much turmoil. Here you will see more of the rejoicing. If you want to read about the turmoil, check out the post: Not the way I thought it would be.

July in California:
We flew to California the day before Kaleia's 2nd birthday to take advantage of one last free flight. We joined Brian at Azusa Pacific University for his graduate exhibition and graduation. Nana flew with us, and Grandpa Gracey and Grandma and Grandpa Rush joined us later in the week. We managed to fit in birthday celebrations for Kaleia and Brian in the midst of frantic art show preparations. Make sure to click read more.

Breakfast at SeaTac airport, on our way to join Brian in California. This is one of Maggie's favorite pictures.

A Year in Unpublished Pictures - 2011: Part 1

2011 was filled with many Rushcapades. Much is missing from our blog archive - like all of May through August. So this year's unpublished picture list grew to more than just the one or two per month I like to keep it to. I decided we needed a three part installment. Part 1 - The Lead Up. Part 2 - Travels, or Insanity. Part 3 - Intro to China. There are many more pictures on our flickr site if you are interested. Hope you enjoy! Make sure to click Read More to see the whole post.

January:
Sisters love each other.
Brian goes to California for his last Jan term and begins the final stretch to graduation.
Shannon has her first skype interviews for international school jobs.

To Magnolia, at three years

Birthday Queen
 Dear Magnolia,

You made it to three!  The count down to your self-ordained day for bed-time-panty-wearing is finally over.

You woke up from a nap with this on.
The red on your legs is a shirt.
In a recent email Grandma Rush described you as "sweetness personified." I couldn't agree more. Oh, you have your crabby moments and do your fair share of whining, but overall you are a pleasant, helpful kid. Lately, when those crabby moments occur you will announce to the family "I need some alone time." Off you go to your room to read books on your bed. Ten minutes later, a happy little girl emerges.  I know plenty of adults that don't have the self-awareness or maturity to do that!

Before I became your Mama I had no idea how elaborate pretend play could be. About 6 months ago your friend Dora (who is connected to the cartoon celebrity only by name) appeared. Since then the troupe has grown to include several regulars: Dora's Mama, Laag, Shoosh, Baby Louie (who is a girl by the way), Baby Jesus and Baby Jesus's Mama. We also interact regularly with your baby, Chica, and your favorite animal friends: Mona, Owl, Penguin, and Zebra. In fact, one of my friends commented recently how they love to see what animal you bring with you each time you visit. Sometimes you are a baby penguin, others you are a tiger. You go to school to do your papers and you put your friends in timeout. Soccer games in the evening are a regular, hilarious occurance that consists of running around in circles and occasionally kicking with sound effects. If I ever show the slightest objection to your plan to go outside or to the store, you patiently inform me that it is the 'tend outside.

Your imagination has definitely enriched our lives, but it also has given us the biggest parenting challenge yet. "THE BUGS ARE GETTING ME!" You started shouting this phrase at what seemed random times, although most often during our bed time routine. At first we thought your dry skin was itchy so we tried treating your "bugs" with lotion. It worked for awhile. We tried denying their existance. That just made it worse. For awhile we could carefully pick them off of you and feed them to Trudy or throw them out the window, but it was up to you whether we got them all. It was exasperating! Finally, we had a conversation about how birds and monkeys love to eat bugs, and luckily you had two birds -- Owl and Penguin-- and one monkey -- Mona -- that slept with you and they would eat your bugs for you. So specially positioning your night time protectors has mostly kept the bugs at bay for several weeks now. (Fingers crossed!)

"Let's count." You are starting to get the counting pattern, just needing prompting for the next name as each group of ten is completed. You love to type on the computer and ask us what number you wrote or what you spelled. Teeth brushing, hand washing, and eating go much smoother when counting is involved.

You are a girl of routine. You always wear your purple sparkle dress on Tuesdays after dance class. Bedtime consists of two books, three songs, and three questions, though the songs are getting replaced by requests to make up our own stories and the questions sometimes turn into general requests to talk about something you are processing.  "Let's talk about the snow part in the monster movie."

You informed us that your dinosaur is a boy.
You love to draw, stamp, do puzzles and read. You tend to do the same thing over and over and over for a little while and then put it away. For example, I've read D.W. the Picky Eater and The Spooky Old Tree so many times I barely look at the words when I am reading it, which came in handy when a page got torn out and you still wanted the entire story. It's harder when you want me to read the "Frunch" part in your Vancouver Olympics book. When I insist I don't know how to read French, you insist that Papa told me how so I must read the "Frunch."

Lately, you've become more affectionate with all of us, telling us you love us or want a hug or a kiss. You love your sister and like most older siblings your actions are a combination of helping, advocating for, and bossing. You call Kaleia "sweaty" and "honey." You are sure to inform us or reprimand her when she is doing something she shouldn't and you can absolutely fall apart when she inadvertently messes up an integral part of your make-believe. Kaleia is invited to play in most of your games and you are learning to share, because you want Kaleia to share with you. Your sister recently moved into your room, and every night you excitedly ask if Kaleia gets to sleep in your room with you.

Thank you for being you, for helping me learn about myself, and for making my life more full. I can't wait to see what is next in store for you.

In many ways, it feels like you've been three for a while.  Don't rush to four TOO quickly.

Kaleia at 1.5 years!

Face pressed to the glass of the door at the Dancing for Joy studio, Kaleia is focused. Jamming her finger against the glass she shouts, "Mayno!"
Two things make our very active toddler stop in her tracks: 1) her big sister (Mayno) and 2) Dancing.
Kaleia has an undying love for her sister. While she does assert herself and takes what she wants, if Magnolia provides the slightest protest, Kaleia will stop. She initiates hugs and kisses, and while not a constant shadow, she definitely loves to copy her sister. Waiting for Magnolia to wake up is almost torture. At the slightest noise from Magnolia's room, Kaleia will turn and first whisper "Mayno?," then sprint to her closed door, cackling, and pound her little palms on the door screaming for her sister. The recently roused Magnolia is not always as excited at this wake up party, especially if her little sister's noise woke her prematurely.

As for dancing, watch for a video in the near future. Walking through my high school with the girls one day, we heard the orchestra practicing in the theatre. Kaleia stopped and bolted down the adjoining hall about 10 feet closer and just started groovin’. Any time this girl hears a beat, she can't help but move. And not in the normal toddler feet-planted single-motion "dance", but a full body celebration with arms waving, feet tapping, hips swaying and the occasional twirl, roll or crawl that may foreshadow future breakdancing skills. Her most frequent sign is for music, pointing at the cd player, insisting we turn it on. If her vocabulary was more advanced, she would not be requesting nursery lullabies, but Arcade Fire instead.
If Kaleia doesn't end up being a dancer or musician, she will probably be a dental hygentist, because this girl loves to brush her teeth. Any time in the bathroom, she signs to brush her teeth and can often be distracted, if need be, by suggesting a tooth-brushing session. The only hard part is ending it.

This week at Kaleia's well-check, Dr. Jen commented that "she has a sparkle in her eye." And it is so true. She lives life fully, throwing her whole body into everything, just like her dancing. Kaleia-leia throws, kicks, snuggles, kisses, and sings. She doesn't mind getting dirty; spoons are quickly discarded and plates invariably become hats.
Kaleia loves to laugh, and will often ask for "Mo Tickaticka." This weekend while changing her diaper, I alternated necessary steps with Zerberts to keep her in place. After each slobbery tummy tickle, she asked for more. One time I just tickled her with my fingers, to which she scrunched her brow and told me "No. More Plbthhhh." Her longest sentence yet.
While she doesn't know many words, Kaleia knows how to sing. You can tell she is singing her favorite "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," even though only a few of the syllables may be distinguishable, usually “up above...”. She also loves to make up her own songs, often inspiring her sister to join in.
Kaleia loves delivering bones to the dogs and has started looking at books on her own. She loves her baby and to our astonishment takes really good care of it despite never seeing us with a baby like her sister did. Babies are another surefire attention grabber. If there is one in the vicinity, making noise or not, she will notice.
She pretends more than Magnolia did at this age, feeding you or her baby, or talking on the phone. Kaleia loves hats or putting on costumes. And strangely, she is very tuned in to airplanes, just like her sister was. Go figure. She is still a string bean, weighing 21.5 pounds (15th percentile) and measuring 33 inches tall (85th percentile).

Words: Mama, Papa, Mayno, Baby, Shoosh (soother), Shoe, Bagel (food), Apple (food), Eee (eat), Moe (more), Peese (please), Mal (milk), Up, Nigh, Hi, Bye, Cah (car), Rah-rah (Rana, her stuffed frog), Buh (book), Bah (bath), No, mano (mine), ball, cheese, c(r)acker, ham, eye (always whispered), mou (mouth), Keia

Kaleia Shalom, we are blessed to share our life with you. May you never lose your sparkle!
Thanks to Josh Durias for capturing these shots of Kaleia while we were hanging out in the studio!

A Letter to Magnolia at 2 1/2

Oh how you've changed the last six months! I thought after you hit two years old, your rapid development would slow. If at 2 you were no longer a baby, at 2 1/2 you are a full-fledged little girl. Sometimes you tell me that you are still a baby or will be a baby again soon, but for the most part you declare yourself bigger. I agree, you are bigger and have shed your baby ways, most notably in your speech. These are some of the phrases you are trying out:

"Don't worry about it."
"Sure."
"Oh my gosh."
"Nothing." (You use this one when asked "What are you doing?" and you are afraid the true response will be unacceptable)
"Goomeez, dogs." You have so many fun word approximations. This one (which was your way of saying excuse me) was one of the first we noticed and still is a favorite. Though, it seems like we barely have time to capture these mispronunctions before they are gone. Already Keia has become Kaleia.

"Mama, where Aaare you?" You may look like your Papa, but you are turning into a little mini-me. You watch me closely and I am your preferred parent for most tasks. As your personality emerges, I've watched you start to struggle with things I struggled with as a child. I'm hoping that will help me anticipate your needs. You are definitely more shy lately. But sometimes you declare, "I'm not going to be shy." And you aren't. I love that.

"That's Papa's spot." You are very concerned with doing things correctly and are quick to inform people of their mistakes. This is especially true with Kaleia. Sometimes it is helpful -- like when you inform us that she getting into the dog water or making her way to the stairs when the gate was left open. Sometimes it's annoying, like when you reprimand us for giving Kaleia pain when she's crying on the change table.

"Does the big fork go here, Mama?" This need for reassurance on the correctness of your actions has been combined with your helpfulness. You are still pretty independent and want to do things on your own, but these days you give up more quickly and cry for help in order to do things right.

"Mama, you have blue eyes. Papa has green and brown eyes, called hazel." Along the same lines, you like to rehearse what you know and what is happening. It often feels like we have a play-by-play announcer in our house. You are especially obessed with eye color and whether or not people are girls and therefore have 'ginas or boys and have a penis.

"Mama, that's a red hand, not orange." Another thing you have become obsessed with is traffic lights. While walking together, I taught you about crosswalks and how we know it is safe to cross. You watch for the red hand or the white person all of the time. Papa tried to correct my misteaching by telling you that the hand was actually orange. This totally rocked your world. For days, you repeated that the hand was red. If we disagreed you grew upset, so we dropped it and let you think it was red.

"Papa, Stop! The light is red! That means stop!" Naturally, you developed an interest in traffic lights for cars too. Each time we drive through an intersection you announce your knowledge. One day, Papa turned right at a red light. You freaked out! So we had to explain free right turns. I never expected to have a backseat driver so soon!

"Different eat." In addition to your bossiness, you are pretty opinionated, especially about your clothes, but have also begun to battle over your food. When the options presented do not suit your liking, you request to have different food and, like many things in your young life, you prefer consistency. You have yogurt or a bagel almost everyday for breakfast.

"What is happening after my snooze?" You also want to know what is happening at all times. You want to know what day it is and love to cross days off on the calendar. On the positive side, routine and keeping you informed of what is happening battles your increasing "whys" and "whines."

"Have to go Paawtttty!" Our bed time routine is pretty consistent, including your calling to go to the bathroom after all other steps are complete. The annoying part is that the request is usually legitimate. Somehow the poop that wouldn't come five minutes ago, will magically come as soon as songs are sung and bedtime kisses are given. What's a parent to do? Make you sleep all night in your own feces?

"When I am 3, I can wear panties to bed." "You have to be 7 to crack eggs." You are pretty much potty-trained and could probably wear panties to bed now. But one day when you asked me when you could wear them I told you three. I've learned that I have to be careful when I tell you what the rule is, because you hang on to and enforce them.

"You are happy, Papa? Why are your eyebrows sad?" You are still very in tune with people's emotions. You've grown more affectionate. Out of the blue, you will rub my back or stroke my face and tell me that you love me. You still need and give kisses as a cure-all for pain. Mona and Baby are still very special and are well cared for. You pour out your love on them, mimicking everything you see us do, including giving them time-outs, announcing that Baby needs to calm down.

"Mona needs to go potty." Your imagination is elaborate and active! In spite of your need to have things predictable and just so, you are able to pretend just about anything. You love imagining yourself as a banana when you are wrapped in your yellow towel and demand that we eat you. In addition to raspberries (or zerberts) you request blackberries and blueberries on your tummy.

"Would you like some pancakes?" You still love to cook -- both pretend in your kitchen and for real in Mama's kitchen. You know about letting dough rest and can handle a whisk pretty well. Holding your knife in one hand and your fork in the other, you cross them back and forth, to cut our pretend food into little pieces. You "read" my recipes and count the ingredients.

"Can you read with me?" Books go with you everywhere, even to bed in the dark. You have memorized lots of lines and say them on the correct page. Sometimes you read front to back, other times back to front. You still love books where you identify things, but books with a plot line are piquing your interest. Your current favorites are The Three Little Pigs, Walter the Wolf, and Curious George.

"I need to take a bath. I'm pretty stinky." So much of what you do and say makes me laugh every day. You brighten my day and challenge me to grow. I cherish you.

Lova you...to the moon and back.

You at 2

**Disclaimer: This post is over 6 months overdue. I started writing it just before Magnolia's 2nd birthday. I'd work on it, then life would get busy. I finally finished editing it and wanted to share it before my letter to her at 2-1/2. I know it is long. Mostly, it is for Magnolia, but I thought some of you might enjoy learning more about my daughter through my eyes.***

A letter to Magnolia:

These are things that I've noticed, that I love, that I never want to forget about how you are at 2.

You are growing, changing, learning so fast it is hard to keep up. We find you copying almost everything we do. We see elements of ourselves in you as well as your own emerging personality. You get excited, just like me, over little things like a cozy bed or blueberries hiding in your yogurt. You've inherited my ticklishness, but unlike me, you invite it. Papa loves this! Just like your Papa, books go with you everywhere -- to the potty, to bed, in the car. You "read" on your own and to Kaleia. Kid books, contemporary art magazines, it doesn't matter.

Everyday new words come out of your mouth surprising Papa and me. We already miss your baby words like "nu-nu" (bunny). You say things like "Sounds good" and "A-K" (okay) and at 2, call yourself "you," which is no wonder since that is how we address you. Some of your attempts at correct pronunciation are hilarious. "Ho-ho-potty" (Hippopotamus) is one of my favorites. Or like how you can't just call something little or small. It has to be "little tiny baby ho-ho-potty" in a high sqeaky voice. You also still accompany speech with signs when you are really excited. And at times your increasing vocabulary makes you pretty hard to understand.

These breakdowns in communication are beginning to turn into meltdowns because at 2, you are very emotional. When faced with a choice you are often crippled with regret after your first choice and passionately flip-flop between wanting the two choices. (Sorry for the times we could not hold in our laughter. It's just really funny.)

The easy choices for you are whether you want to do something on your own or if you want help. You are independent. For the most part you dress and feed yourself. You love to brush your teeth and floss. Sometimes you even do your own airplanes when you need encouraging to finish food on your plate.

Although you prefer to do things for yourself, you love to be a helper. If you hear the dishwasher open or the dryer door close, you come running to help put dishes away and fold clothes. I can't cook a meal without you running in asking for a chair so you can cook too.

To balance your newfound independence, you've also grown more affectionate. You ask to be held more these days and love to cuddle. You like to give back rubs--and we love receiving them. Much of your days are spent caring for Mona or Baby or the animal of the day, rocking, feeding (both breastfeeding and in the high chair), and putting her to bed.

Your caring nature goes beyond the pretend world. You are in tune to whether people are happy or sad or tired, often equating the last two. You've moved beyond Mama kisses as the cure-all. Your kisses apparently have healing power now too and you generously administer them whenever you hear someone exclaim in pain. You have soothed us all, including yourself and have even taught Mona the art of healing with kisses.

You are especially in tune to your sister's needs, often hearing Kaleia's waking cries before the rest of us. Your peek-a-boo makes your sister laugh the hardest. Recognizing when Kaleia needs a toy, you happily provide one for her, sometimes even sharing your Mona.

But the sharing must be on your own terms. You say "No, no, no Keia" when she gets into something you believe she shouldn't have. But you are your bossiest with the dogs, often banishing them from a room or instructing them to sit. Even so Otis can get you to laugh harder than anyone but Papa. You and he will often chase his tail together. Your animosity may come from the fact that Otis likes to eat your books and wooden puzzles. Usually, you just state that it is sad, and play with the mangled puzzle pieces anyway.

That you are able to forgive this offense so easily is impressive because you LOVE puzzles. Both jigsaw and magnetic-bear-dressing entertain you for hours. You build towers and lines with blocks, organizing by shapes and color. You are always on the look out for matches. You love to count and say your abc's. You can be distracted while driving in the car by finding letters.

You love to sing. Sometimes you practice songs you know or make up your own. You've got twinkle, twinkle little star down and can almost do the ABCs, but you are pretty shy about singing when you know someone is listening. At bedtime, we sing ABCs, Twinkle Twinkle, and Rock-a-bye Baby, with the occasional bonus track: Itsy-Bitsy Spider.

There is so much I treasure and love about you at 2. I know you will outgrow many of these things and others will form the building blocks of your character, but either way they make up a layer of your story that I will always love.

1 Year Old!

Kaleia Shalom at one year:
  • Weight: 18# 6oz. (10th percentile)
  • Height: 29.5 inches (50th percentile)
  • Teeth: 6 (two bottom and four top), but working on #7
  • Words: Shoosh (soother), Bye-bye, Uh-oh, (Mama, Papa, Kiss have made an occasional appearance but are not consistent)
  • Signs: All Done, Milk, More, Nigh-Night, Bye-Bye, Change
  • Kaleia is not walking yet, but she rapidly scurries across the ground by either bear-crawling or with a knee-foot-combo crawl. When she pauses, stands, neck out-stretched, she reminds us of a meerkat surveying her land before taking off again.
I'm not sure about her developmental checkpoints, because her doctor's appointment is not until September. I do know that she loves to throw things. Her interest in books is increasing. She now points at objects that interest her and can point to family members correctly. She pretends to talk on the phone and LOVES babies! At one, Kaleia is sweet and laid-back until something does not go her way, then she passionately lets the offender know of her displeasure. We're looking forward to the adventure of year 2, with all of its special moments and parenting lessons.

Happy 11 Month Birthiversary!

This month's theme is Babies. No, it is not a secret message to let you know we are having another one. Rather it is symbolic of the end of our baby stage, this being our last birthiversary post--maybe ever... at least for awhile. While we will all benefit from having fewer cupcakes around each month, I will miss my monthly creativity challenge.

Kaleia is less and less like a baby everyday. And this month she discovered caring for babies herself. While her technique still needs improvement, her passion for the small stuffed look-a-like makes up for it.

Baby sightings bring out the biggest squeals, but overall little miss Leia makes a lot of noise anyways. Her goos and gaas, babababs, and other fun noises are all still pretty random but we think in addition to her "Ssss" for kiss, she is using "Mama" appropriately, often in a demanding tone upon waking in the morning. Being the oldest, Magnolia may teach Kaleia a thing or two as they grow up, but Kaleia is the one who has taught Magnolia how to yell. They often get into vocal exchanges for fun, ratcheting their voices higher and higher, copying each other's nonsensical sounds.

Besides her vocal expression, she is also very expressive with her face. The picture at the bottom was a classic face this month.

She also has started expressing herself through signs. Just the basics: milk, eat, more, and all done. Eat is the most used, with Kaleia often enthusiastically repeating the motion of hand to mouth as she is eating.

Her eating has improved, which in turn has meant that our string bean has started to gain some weight again. As an added benefit she has also started sleeping through the night.

As Kaleia sheds her babyness and her personality emerges, we see that Gremlin (or Gremmi-bear) was a fitting nickname for more than just the noises she makes. Kaleia is a cute little mischief maker. Happily, she looks at you, giggles, and drops food over the side of the high chair. After being told no touch to the dog water, she smiles and instead of touching the water, she overturns the dish. While we still have a pretty sweet girl on our hands, we think she is going to be a bit more of a parenting challenge than our compliant Magnolia.

Happy 11 Month Birthiversary Gremmi-Bear!

Happy 10 Month Birthiversary!

The Bloods street gang has a pretty cool one, Spock had the “live long and prosper”, the queen has her signature lead-with-the-elbow-but-not-too-fast wave, Richard Nixon had his famous two-fingered victory V’s, Michael Jackson had his crotch grab, and Kaleia Rush has this:
Okay this picture looks a little like she's taking a page out of Hitler's book but usually the Kaleia reach is a little more her distinctive. The shoulder comes right up to her cheek (go ahead, try it...) and her palm flares outward. Either way, she does it A LOT, and reaching out, in general, is a very fitting gesture for this stage of Kaleia’s life. Whether it’s for something to support herself walking (which she can’t quite do on her own yet) or to grab some mischief (constant vigilance!) or to reach out to someone (her Mama attachment has definitely abated), she is always reaching for something.

She is also reaching out with her voice more and more and I think we have a real talker. Making noise is definitely at the top of her favorite hobbies list. Loud ones, quiet ones, delicate ones, and growly gremlin ones. She babbles consonants and screams for fun, especially when she can lure Magnolia into joining the chorus. The duets we get in the back seat of the car are somewhere between hilarious, adorable and I-know-this-is-gonna-be-annoying-soon. She doesn’t have any words yet but we suspect she’s starting to make the connection between her “mamama”s and her Mama.

Maybe it’s because she is so interested in vocalizing or maybe it’s our inconsistency but, aside from “milk,” she hasn’t picked up many signs.

We haven’t reported Kaleia’s stats as faithfully as we did Magnolia’s but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been on our radar. In fact, Kaleia’s growth has been our biggest concern. She has always struggled to gain weight dropping from the 95th to the 80th to the 65th to the 50th and is now at the 25th percentile. In the last three months she has only put on a few ounces and now her growth in length has also slowed. The benefit has been that she is still in 9-month clothes but I’d much rather she start packing the pounds. Thankfully, she’s started to accept foods that have texture so our weight gain bid has become a little easier.

Even if she’s not growing much, our little girl is definitely growing up. We love you Kaleia Shalom. Happy belated 10-month birthiversary!

Happy 9 Month Birthiversary!

At 9 months, Kaleia's days are filled with three things. Her sleeping is angelic most of the time, so there's not much to talk about there, and her eating is best conveyed with a photo or video. Her locomotion on the other hand is something else. Kaleia will crawl from the moment you put her down until the moment you tell her it's time to do one of her other two activities. Purposefully exploring every floorbound object and exercising her newly learned skill of transitioning into a sit, her favorite is the toy basket. Bare carpet to toy minefield in 30 seconds flat!

Recently, in our church's toy minefield, Kaleia is exploring the doorstop when a slightly older girl crawls over and slaps her on the head. The incident epitomizes a big part of Kaleia's chill personality, because rather than crying, as many babies would--it was a pretty good slap, and out of the blue too--Kaleia just kinda looks at her, as curious about the slapper as she is the door stop. Her eyes don't stay dry for long though. As soon as the offender's mom comes over and gives her a little thwap of her own, Kaleia loses it.

As exciting as the floor and all its treasures can be, Kaleia, aware that there are many goodies lurking just out of reach, has just learned to stand. Grunting and straining, she pulls herself up at Magnolia's kitchen. Proudly she stands, surveys, and swipes everything to the floor grinning from ear to ear. Luckily, her sister is napping.

If she weren't, Mama and Papa's mediation skills would get a little more excercise. Increased mobility has meant many more sibling battles. So far both girls are appeased quickly with our "trade" system: if Magnolia wants what Kaleia has, she can bring Kaleia a different toy to exchange. I don't think this is gonna work much longer.

It's not all toy battles and animosity though. The girls' sister bond is growing all the time. Even at this young age I watch the girls look at each other with great love. It seems like Kaleia already looks up to her sister, and Magnolia, for a two-year-old, is incredibly in tune with her sister's emotions and needs.

Maggie gives Kaleia the giggles pretty much everyday. The back seat of the car, with Mags facing forward and Leia facing back, is a prime location for toddler comedy. "Peek(-a-boo)" is a guaranteed giggle. Or better yet is the faux reprimand, when, after informing us that "Keia looking you at," Maggie narrows her eyes, shakes her head and says "No Keia. No Keia." Usually the initial complaint is sincere. Maggie is genuinely upset that her sister is looking at her (oh man, future roadtrips are looking scary) but at Kaleia's first giggle, Mags is thoroughly cured of her grumpies.

Speaking of the grumpies, Kaleia's tears, while relatively rare, have made more appearances this month as she struggled to push out her top front teeth, had a really bad diaper rash and dealt with her first cold.

We haven't gotten her to swimming lessons or any other special activities to fight the second child syndrome yet, but we've definitely increased one-on-one time with our Kaleia-leia. Mama is still her favorite and her go-to when tired, sick or in unfamiliar settings. But she's reacquainted with her Papa and even recently initiated a kiss with him in spite of the beard she normally avoids. Having just learned to sit up and stand up she seems to be on the verge of even more developments. Her personality is emerging and we can't wait to get to know her better.

Happy 8 Month Birthiversary!

Stealthy as a soldier bellying across the battlefield, Kaleia glides across the laminate flooring. Mission: Dog food bowl.

"Kaliea no touch."

In the instant it takes to lift the temptation out of reach, she's off to the unguarded kitchen. Next Mission: Splashing in the Water Dish. Foiled again! Okay...New Mission: Finding something small to put in mouth.

With all the army crawling she does I often contemplate designing her some jammies made of swiffer sheets so she can be my ally in The War of the Dirty Floor. Until then we'll just stick with changing her uniform often. Lucky for us she recently hit the all-important milestone of pushing her own arm through her sleeve.

During moments of ceasefire, Kaleia spends her time: standing at the music table jamming, making lots of (mostly spitting) noises, and reading--instead of eating-- the occasional book with Mama and Papa.

Sweet potatoes, having the right texture, taste and stomach agreeablity, have become a daily staple. But M-I-L-K is still the prefered sustenance. We now have to spell the word so as to not insight a wiggle fit, a fit rivalled only by Mama's return from work. Surprise kisses freely given are a welcome development and enthusiastic high-fives are a fun new trick.

Eye rubs and sweet moments of resting her head are surefire tiredness alarms and she's still super easy to put down. With the increased mobility and activity we experienced a few glorious nights of full sleep until the invasion of The Two Front Teeth. Hopefully, a treaty will be estabilished soon and our little Gremmi-bear will be transformed into a Gremmi-beaver. We do however need to teach her that Mama is not a chew toy.

Unfortunately, we are realizing, that despite our best intentions, 2nd child syndrome has set in. We have not been as intentional about signing with Kaleia or reading to her. She hasn't had swimming lessons or been to as many places as Maggie had at her age. While we know that it is not possible to give her the exact same experience (and in some ways her experience is better than Magnolia's -- we are wiser, more prepared parents and she got to begin life with a loving sister) we want to make sure we don't deprive her of the activities that will help her develop.

That's our mission.

Maggie-Speak Vocabulary Quiz

After being gone for a month Brian is getting a crash course in Maggie-Speak. More and more of Magnolia's "baby" words are being replaced by the "real" words.

So we thought we'd do a little quiz before they're all gone. Below are some of our favorite Maggie words spelled according to her pronunciation. Post your translation guesses in the comments. We'll post the answers in a few days.

1) beer
2) nah
3) noo-n00
4) go-go s(h)a-s(h)a
5) oh-lo0 choo-choo
6) chin-chin
7) c0-meh
8) pay weh-weh
9) hoohoo soup
10) ape-team

Hint: There are 3 edibles, 4 animals, 1 number, 2 articles of clothing, and 2 verb phrases. We realize that doesn't add up to 10. Some of them do double duty.
