Our New Pets

WORMS!

At a workshop on Saturday, hosted by The Lettered Streets Covenant Church, I finally learned how to compost.  Not only will this cut down on our waste but our wormy friends (which are pretty amazing: check out Wikipedia) will turn all our organic kitchen waste (except dairy and meat) into nutrient rich fertilizer for our garden.

Wanna start your own worm bins? The following links were given at the workshop:

Just what the doctor ordered!

Recently, my doctor gave me his lecture on swimming again. He really encourages his patients to get in the pool to help give their bodies a break as well as get some good exercise.

I've been reluctant. I'm not a big water person. I barely made it through the swim test each summer I worked at Camp Firwood. And who wants to spend a bunch of money on a pregnancy swim suit that you are only going to wear a few times?

Tuesday night, the night before Brian left for California, he combatted all of my excuses by calling our local aquatic center for open swim times, getting me some of his shorts and a t-shirt, and said we were going on a date.

We spent probably 45 minutes in the pool swimming, floating and just enjoying the water. It was great! I wish I had done it more throughout my pregnancy -- maybe next time. We did decide we are going to go more often over the next few weeks.

It also got me thinking about doing a mom and baby swimming class to help me get back into shape after she is born. I would also love for our kids to be more comfortable in the water than I am and maybe starting young would help.

Cool Tip #2 - Iron

So people always say that eating while you are pregnant is so easy because you can eat anything. That hasn't been true for me. I find it so difficult, mostly because I still struggle to eat meat which makes it hard to get enough protein for baby. Then after my last blood test, my doctor said I need to be eating more iron.

Brian has become the "iron and protein nazi," which I appreciate how supportive he is, but it is still frustrating. The forced burritos at bedtime when I realized that I hadn't eaten much protein was humorous/annoying but also very sweet.

Tonight, after completing my last blog, I asked Brian if he wanted to share a grapefruit with me. I can always eat fruit. He said, "Shouldn't you eat some spinach? You haven't had much iron today." I told him that I really didn't want any spinach and he suggested that I eat both. Not feeling that hungry I decided to search for iron rich foods on google, secretly hoping something yummier like grapefruit would be on the list.

Healthcastle.com came up first on the list. On their homepage it listed Spinach as an Iron Absorption Inhibitor and grapefruit as an Iron Absorption Enhancer. There was also a link entitled "Is Spinach a good source of iron?" Feeling a little cheeky, and emboldened by my new knowledge of the limitations of spinach and the power of grapefruit, I clicked on the link thinking that I was going to prove Brian wrong and be able to just eat my grapefruit.

Unfortunately, in the section labeled "So should you or should you not eat Spinach?" it said spinach will be a good source of iron if you eat it with an Iron Absorption Enhancer...like grapefruit. So as I am typing up our story to share with you my newly found knowledge, I am eating a spinach salad with grapefruit slices. And Brian is gloating.

Cool Tip #1: Hiccups

Today, while working in my office, I started hiccuping. After awhile my colleague that was working in the office with me started laughing, then giving advice on how to get rid of them. I tried holding my breath, trying to yawn, trying to burp, drinking water really fast, etc. I didn't try drinking water with my head upside down, like my colleague suggested, because I didn't want to end up with water all over myself.

After about an hour, I stopped by another colleagues classroom and asked him to come by the office at some point to try to scare the hiccups out of me. It was my last resort. As I was making my request, he told me to tell him when my next hiccup was going to be. Thinking that he was going to try to scare me right then I didn't take him seriously. He told me he was serious and to concentrate. So I did and found that I didn't know when the next one was going to come. Then I realized I had stopped hiccuping!!

He says it works every time. The act of concentrating on when your next hiccup is coming makes you stop hiccuping. Try it! Let me know if it works for you and it wasn't just a coincidence today.
